3 Key Features of the SRT Format for Festival Distribution

Published: 7 Dec, 2023

The SRT file (or SubRip file) is the most popular and sought-after subtitle file format in the audiovisual world. Here are 3 key features to bear in mind for proper use and understanding of its basic functioning, aimed atfestival distribution:

1. An SRT File Is Plain Text

Original SRT files do not contain information about their format. They are independent subtitle files, able to adapt to each media player’s configuration. This is what a SRT file looks like:

Thanks to this plain text SRT feature, we can easily modify the appearance of the subtitles from the player itself. On VLC, for instance, you can change the appearance by clicking on Preferences > Subtitles / OSD.

Even well-known streaming platforms like Netflix or Prime Video include an option to change the appearance of the subtitles. Other video platforms such as Vimeo come with a reconfigured subtitle appearance, but they still allow you to upload multiple SRT files to the same video. This way, you can have sets of subtitles in mutilple languages with just one link.

2. Compatible with All Operating Systems

A plain text file, such as SRT or TXT, can be opened using default text editors onany operating system. From Windows Notepad to Mac’s TextEdit.

3. Adaptive Coding

Character encoding makes the conversion of our natural language into computer data easier, converting the characters into a format media players can read.

Among the different encoding systems, the standard is Unicode, which covers European scripts, as well as Chinese, Japanese, etc. This standard includes several subsets of characters. In order for our subtitles (in English, French or Spanish) to work, they need to be stored in the UTF-8 subset (Unicode Transformation Format). As challenging as it may be, if there is a problem we should thoroughly check the encoding of characters and modify it.
